Animals that are self-aware include bottle-nose dolphins, apes and elephants, as well as humans. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences at http://www.pnas.org/content/103/45/17053.abstract explains the use of mirrors to determine self-awareness. If the animal responds to seeing a mark on their body in a mirror, by touching that mark they are considered self-aware. The study did not explain how that test was conducted with the dolphins.
